The first days of school…again!

The first day of school just happened again. Just like every new school year, you need to establish systems and routines in your new digital “Classroom.” And you need to practice them. Because of the time lost during school shutdowns, it can be tempting to jump back into instruction ASAP. But just like the first day of school, ignoring systems and routines now will cause chaos later. Invest in the time to create, explain, and practice new digital-classroom expectations now so students and families feel comfortable with the structure and can apply it in throughout their remote learning experience.

Good teachers know how to anticipate the requirements for space, time, and people in their classrooms. Applying those same skills to remote classrooms will be very helpful. As parents work from home with students, they’ll likely take on varying roles in your digital classroom. You may or may not know your individual students’ parents at this point, but you likely have enough experience to plan for the level of support family members will be able to provide to students.

The good news is this: you’re no longer confined by some of the traditional boundaries of a brick-and-mortar classroom. That means you can get creative with the ways you structure your new digital space for optimal student learning!
